It’s not because I’m naive, but simply because what we’re seeing is a dozen or so e-mails (maybe more, maybe less… I can’t get a clear answer on that) out of MANY THOUSANDS. E-mails between individuals who know each other often contain shorthand, in-jokes, and whatnot. I’ve had discussions with fellow writers that, when taken out of context, would make very little sense to anyone not included in the discussion. Heck, this is even more accurate when it comes to e-mails I’ve shared with girlfriends.
What do I think is going on? Paranoia. I think people want to see things that fit in with their personal view of the world. That’s why horoscopes and tarot cards are still in use. What makes more sense — that e-mails about raping little girls and boys are going around where they can be intercepted… or that their meaning is something simple and innocent that are simply misconstrued by those outside of the discussion?
