
This last weekend, Mt Ontake, about 130 miles west of Tokyo, erupted without warning, catching volcanologists and hikers by surprise. But research papers published earlier this year reveal that a supervolcano like Yellowstone doesn’t need seismic shifts (felt as earthquakes) to trigger an eruption.
Supervolcanoes are triggered by the buoyancy of their massive magma dome and Yellowstone’s magma dome is 2.5 x’s bigger than previously believed.
Meanwhile, some rangers are denying the road that melted earlier this summer was due to geothermal activity. Is it just another example of a government that has disdain for transparency?
