A British tourist in Italy captured an amazing video of his car melting recently, as the “killer” heatwave persists in many parts of Europe.

John Westbrook was returning to his car in blistering temperatures of 37C (98F) in the beach town of Caorle, Northern Italy.

From Express:

The video shows the lights, wing mirrors and window fittings melting off a Renault Megane parked near the beach.

The taxi driver, from Folkestone, Kent, said: “We drove past and just couldn’t believe what we were seeing. Bits of the car were literally dripping off on to the road.

“Even bits of the bumper were melted and the wing mirrors were starting to buckle.”

Seeing the funny side of the “unbelievable” event, Mr Westbrook said: “I guess the moral of the story is don’t trust French cars.”

The video comes as tourists are warned of a killer heatwave across Europe, with temperatures in the Mediterranean soaring to an astonishing 63C.

The extreme heat has caused steering wheels to melt in Cyprus, forcing locals to use oven gloves in order to drive.

Residents are also putting their mobile phones in the fridge to keep them working.

Record temperatures in north-western Italy have left 140 pensioners dead in the first ten days of July alone this year, according to data from the environmental agency in the region.

Tourists have been advised to drink plenty of water and never to leave children or pets unattended in a car.

The death of Cilla Black was also linked to scorching temperatures on the Costa del Sol.

Mr Westbrook, who is on holiday with his wife Joanne, 45, and son Robbie, 21, said: “As soon as you walk out of the hotel it’s like walking into an oven.”

Experts are likening the current extreme temperatures to the 2003 heatwave that killed around 20,000 people.
