The condition is officially called electromagnetic hypersensitivity or EHS, where people report mild to sometimes debilitating sensitivity when exposed to electromagnetic fields such as those given off by wi-fi networks, cell phones, and fluorescent lights.
In fact, a 39-year old woman in France who had to move into a remote barn with no power was recently approved for about $900 a month in disability pay for up to three years.
While the court did not legitimize EHS as an official disease, the judge did acknowledge that the symptoms she experiences because of it has prevented her from working.
According to the World Health Organization, people with this sensitivity have reported signs of nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and depression, among others.
However, the group states on its website, “There is little scientific evidence to support the idea of electromagnetic hypersensitivity.”
Past research has shown inconsistent outcomes, and scientists have been unable to determine a biological trigger.
