British MPs Vote to Reject Inclusion of Animal Sentience in Withdrawal Bill

Fact checked

The UK government has outdone itself when it comes to the lack of animal welfare in Britain.

MPs have voted to reject the inclusion of animal sentience into the EU Withdrawal Bill – a move one group says undermines Michael Gove’s high animal welfare pledge.

While debating the Brexit bill, the government voted against legislation which recognizes that animals have sentience, and can feel pain and emotions.

The Independent reports: This vote comes in contrast to extensive scientific evidence that shows that other animals do have feelings and emotions, some even stronger than ours.

But politicians clearly think that they know better about animal brains than the majority of scientists on the planet. This complete lack of logic leads me to believe that many of our MPs probably have less intelligence than a jellyfish. But unfortunately I don’t have any stake in Parliament to vote through my personal opinions, unlike those politicians.

Realistically though, who would be surprised by this new vote? Despite Michael Gove’s calls to improve animal welfare standards post-Brexit, we all know the Government, and in fact most of the UK public, doesn’t really care about animals unless they’re cute and fluffy.

“Animal welfare” in the Government’s (and indeed the public’s) eyes is riddled with double standards. At the moment, 80 per centof the UK’s animal welfare legislation comes from the EU – if we’re voting out the fact that animals are sentient, why would we even bother with the rest of it? If the Government doesn’t believe that animals can even feel pain, surely none of their rights will be protected at all.

When we leave the EU, pets will be protected by the Animal Welfare Act 2006. But where does this leave wild animals, those in labs, and those in other forms of captivity? Just a small example of this is cosmetics testing. Under EU law it is illegal to test on animals for cosmetics like body wash and nail varnish. But this could easily be scrapped just like the recognition of animals as sentient beings has been.

We are looking at a very grim future for animals, where labs are free to test on animals with as much cruelty as they wish (and no pain relief, because apparently animals don’t feel pain) and farms are less and less regulated.

Update: We have amended an earlier headline and opening sentence that previously and inaccurately suggested the UK government had declared that  ‘animals do not have ability to feel pain’.

        • It is a sad day that I must observe that the Charter of the UN all Treaties, Conventions, Covenants and Declarations have been Trashed. Article 1 of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities “States shall protect the existence of the ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic identity of minorities within their respective territories and shall encourage conditions for the promotion of that identity.”
The animals in New Karachi have insufficient intelligence to take this message into account and daily violate the assurance. A human would respect another person, a lion just eats them.
Who wrote this? “Consider the respective feeling of two animals, the one of which is eating the other.”

      • Really sad that people like You can be and say such a thing about other living creature. You think You are better than muslims? Why is that, ha? Because for me, You dont have brain and heart so You’re the worst kind of person.

  1. Anybody who has ever flogged a barking dog with a length of Garden Hose will know that dogs indeed feel pain. Anybody who has ever hit a snake on the head with a shovel will know that snakes Do feel pain.

  2. Typical modern libtard logic. Denying nature and everything in or around it any decency or humility.

    • Are you kidding me? Liberals have always advocated animal rights and the environment. It is this CONservatives that are destroying the planet in favor of corporate profits. You can see what 45 is trying to do reversing all the good Pres. Obama brought forth via his executive orders to protect clean air and water as well as protecting the lives of animals via expanding The Endangered Species Act. 45 just tore it down in a couple of months. He does not care about anything but himself. 45 is ugly inside and out without ANY redeeming qualities. You, sir are an ignorant moron.

      • They could be “conservatives” or “moderates” or “liberals” or “labourers” or whatever nonsense terms you idiots come up with. The fact is: all of these viewpoints full under the Modern Liberal/Marxist/Zionist umbrella. And that is what I am talking about. Period(.)

  3. Well I can assure you, when my dog broke its leg he screamed so much, so what would you say he was laughing!!! Bloody fools. Shall we start by torturing the 10 downing street cat? Then tell me if has no pain!!!

  4. Where still in the EU now but what’s the difference they still think the same animals being kept in bad accommodations and treated poorly so we can slaughter them for there meat, Dogs being brought as puppies and being chucked in kennels as soon as there not wanted. Having maybe 3 days to find a home if not it’s to there death, they still have animal testing. But you write up some noncence about the government think they don’t feel pain so if we leave the EU they will not care THEY DON’T anyway. Just a load of shit to make them seem bad to put people of leaving… the vote has already been made just LEAVE already

  5. Animals are living non human sentient with a nervous system scientifically capable of feeling pain and experiencing other emotions including suffering and anguish, Elephants alone have been proven to have long term memory, more in which a human has Elephants never forget good and bad and they do react to both…If you have a central nervous system, you can feel pain. Many animals like elephants feel both physical and emotional pain.
GET A CLUE!!! YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO EVEN DETERMINE SUCH NONSENSE. GO BACK TO SCHOOL, YOU OBVIOUSLY WERE’NT PAYING ATTENTION IN BIOLOGY…..STUPID!! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR SELF!! I WOULDN’T EVEN SHOW MY FACE AFTER SUCH AN UNINTELLIGENT STATEMENT….

  6. Really? I stepped on my dogs leg the other day by accident and he screamed in pain. I felt so bad I rubbed and kissed his paw. It saddens me that a country can be so heartless and cruel. Is there anything we can do to help this poor helpless animals?

  7. these people only have feelings for themselves.couldnt give a toss for animal suffering never did…politicians are what we can get outa this. nothing else..you only have to look at the sentencing for animal cruelty its disgusting…yet in all the years of goverment nothing has been done about it…animal lovers are sick to the teeth of these people who make the law and can change it…i pray for the day a party of animal lovers come to power.its the only way animals wil b treated with love and kindness they deserve.

  8. How do you have the right to say an ainmal can’t feel pain. All animals can feel pain. Just because they can’t tell you like humans can, doesn’t mean that there not in pain. You do not have the right to say that they can’t feel pain, they have nervous systems just like humans they can feel pain as well.

  9. Another way to put it UK Government just declared ‘We are in a state of severe cognitive dissonance, unable to feel empathy’
It is so sad seeing law distance itself from truth in this way. This means so many people afraid change, of letting go of the past, of being able to recognize and admit they have been doing and are still doing the wrong thing.
