Russia to continue developing the world's most advanced nuclear weapons says Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will continue leading the way in producing nuclear weapons, but insisted that the country had no intent to use them.

His comments were made in a documentary called “World Order” which aired on Sunday night.

Putin told defense officials that by developing defenses against ballistic missiles Washington aims to “neutralize” Russia’s strategic nuclear deterrent and gain a “decisive military superiority.”

He said that Russia will respond by developing “strike systems capable of penetrating any missile defenses.”

Militarytimes.com reports:

“Russia as a leading nuclear country will be improving this weapon as a containment factor; the nuclear triad is the basis of our nuclear security polices,” he said, referring to the three main delivery systems for nuclear warheads — bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ICBMs.

“We have never brandished or will brandish this nuclear club, but our military doctrine allocates it a place and role,” he said, according to excerpts reported by the state news agency Tass.
