A spokesman for the force said the threat was not specific to the BBC, adding that a vehicle parked on nearby Regent’s Street had now been deemed ‘non-suspicious’.
In a separate incident, police sniffer dogs were brought in following reports that a ‘suspicious package’ had been found at a building close to London Bridge station.
Both security scares saw thousands of people evacuated from office buildings in close proximity to the suspicious items.
At the BBC, staff at the scene posted pictures of police cordons around Broadcasting House in Portland Place, a short walk from Oxford Circus.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said specialist officers had now been stood down from the alert at London Bridge and the scare was over.
Trains at the station were unaffected by the scare in Tooley Street, Transport for London said, but employees at nearby businesses were told to leave their buildings and head to an assembly point.
Witnesses reported seeing sniffer dogs being led to Counting House, the head office of charity Prostate Cancer UK.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: ‘Police in Southwark were called to Tooley Street, SE1 at 12.26pm on Tuesday, 1 December following information received regarding a suspicious item at the address.
‘Specialist officers attended, a full search was conducted and a number of evacuations took place.’
