Palestinian Shot Dead By Israeli Forces Over Alleged Stabbing Attack

Another Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli forces on Sunday north of the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military claimed that he was trying to carry out a stabbing attack on their soldiers.

The Palestinian health ministry confirmed in a statement that Rami Awartani, 31, was shot dead by Israeli forces near the Huwwara checkpoint, south of Nablus city.

Press TV reports:

Palestine’s Ma’an news agency said the young Palestinian was shot dead on Sunday afternoon at the Huwwara checkpoint near the city of Nablus.

Israeli media said the man had attempted to stab Israeli soldiers stationed at the checkpoint, adding that Israeli troops shoot three to four rounds to his chest and seriously injured him.

An Israeli army spokesperson claimed that the Palestinian exited his vehicle and charged soldiers at the checkpoint, which is an entrance to Nablus.

There were no reports of injury on the side of Israeli soldiers.

The death of the Palestinian is the latest to come in more than nine months of unrest in the occupied territories. More than 200 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli crackdown on people in various Palestinian towns since October last year. Israel says most of those killed had attempted to stab soldiers and settlers.

The violence began in October 2015 when Palestinians protested against what they called a covert plan by the Israelis to change the status quo of the al-Aqsa Mosque, a highly-revered place for the Muslims, which is located in the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.
