Palestinian authorities have arrested over 100 people part of the Hamas group in the past 48 hours, causing tension between the groups.

According to Al Jazeera [1]:

At least 20 people were arrested on Saturday, officials said, a day after about 100 members were detained.

Hamas officials told Al Jazeera that the arrest campaign targetted Hamas members, but also academics, students and former detainees in Israeli prisons.

A security official told the AFP news agency that those arrested “intended to carry out attacks against the Palestinian Authority.” He did not elaborate further.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri condemned the arrests as a “dangerous escalation which blocks efforts and reconciliation.”

“The majority of them (detainees) are academics, university students and released prisoners. These arrests are part of the security coordination between Israel and the Palestinian Authority,” Abu Zuhri said.

Al Jazeera’s Imtiaz Tyab, reporting from the Gaza Strip, said a protest was planned in Gaza City later on Saturday against the arrests of the Hamas members.
