Stories of people living with crippling Lyme Disease often cover our headlines this time of year, but a new study shows something not before understood: Lyme Disease is an STD (sexually transmitted disease). In the study, all females who had it also tested positive for Lyme bacteria in (there’s no easy way to say this) vaginal secretions; about half the semen samples from men with Lyme tested positive as well; and hetero married couples practicing unprotected sex had identical strains.
This “strongly suggests that sexual transmission occurs,” says the study’s Peter Mayne, M.B.B.S.
