A new modernized version of the infamous AK-47 Kalashnikov rifle, the weapon probably responsible for more deaths than any in history, was unveiled last week in Moscow during the Victory Day parade marking the end of World War II.

Space Daily reports:
The upgraded weapon features a universal kit, with increased firing capabilities within a range of 300 yards in all weather conditions, an upgrade to the rifle’s stock and receiver cover, a modernized handguard and forearm units, a new belt, the translator-fuse and ergonomic grip fire control.
Rostec, the state-owned corporation that promotes Russian enterprises, said the weapon will debut at the May 9 Victory Day parade in Moscow, the day Russia celebrates the end of World War II in Europe.
“Modern rifle range, equipped with a new set of modernization, can be adjusted by any tactical problem and will greatly expand the potential use of weapons,” said Sergei Urzhumtsev, deputy general director and chief designer of Concern Kalashnikov.
Rostec said Kalashnikov has developed three variants of the AK-47 that feature additional equipment suitable for use by combined arms units, reconnaissance units and special operations units.
The AK-47, popular with regular military forces worldwide — as well as with insurgent groups, was first fielded by the Soviet Union in 1948.

The AK series of firearms are heavy, mostly inaccurate, based on a 70 year old design and nearly 100% reliable – even with minimal maintenance. Like all Russian weapons from the WW2 era (and before) it was designed to be “peasant proof” – and that is why it is so popular in 3rd world nations (along with its’ low cost).
In contrast, the American design – based on the M16 – is much more modern, employing aluminum alloys extensively. Without going into all the details, it is inherently more accurate. It also has the ability to mount optical sights more securely and in a better position. Even its’ metallic sights are much better than those on the AK. Disadvantages? It requires more maintenance.
Which is better? Well, if my life were on the line, I would chose the AR design.
