Michigan County Threatens to Demolish Amish Family Homes Unless They Give Up Religious Beliefs

The Lenawee County Health Department in Michigan has condemned a number of traditional “old order” Amish family homes and is now asking a court to authorize the demolition of Amish property.

After harassing the Amish community for years regarding its water supply and disposal, the county health department posted signs on traditional Amish family homes earlier this year condemning them as “unfit for human habitation” and filed lawsuits against 14 Amish families in November.

Despite the fact that the Amish community’s choice to live in traditional ways causes no harm to themselves or anyone else, the Lenawee County Health Department has condemned their homes and is now asking a court to authorize the demolition of their property, unless the Amish community abandons its religious beliefs.

If successful, the lawsuits would result in the demolition of the Amish families’ homes and would effectively banish an entire religious community from Lenawee County.

DailySheeple reports: The ACLU and Wright & Schulte filed answers to those lawsuits Wednesday in Lenawee County Circuit Court, which include counterclaims against the county for religious discrimination in violation of the federal and state constitutions and the federal Fair Housing Act.

“The county is persecuting this Amish community because of their deeply held religious beliefs that have safely guided their way of life for generations,” said Phil Mayor, senior staff attorney with the ACLU of Michigan. “Lenawee County residents should be outraged that their local officials, using taxpayer money and in the county’s name, have condemned their Amish neighbors’ homes and are threatening to demolish their houses, and leave them homeless. They should contact their county commissioners and other local officials and implore them to end this vicious attack on the Amish religion.”

The Amish community in Lenawee County adheres to their “old order” religious way of life by hand-pumping water from wells, using outhouses instead of flush toilets, and not using electricity, cell phones, or automobiles.

“This is not a question of public health — it’s Lenawee County officials using religious discrimination as a tactic to run this Amish community out of their homes and destroy their way of life,” said Richard Schulte, attorney with Wright & Schulte, LLC. “This community’s commitment to live according to their religion harms no one.”

  1. Bunch of jerks. I’m thinking this has more to do with the land than anything else, probably want to give it over to a more “deserving” religion like the Muslims to use as a “training camp” of some kind, I mean this is in Michigan don’t forget, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see……..

  2. No private communities in the coming one world government, they have to start knocking down those barriers! Vaccines are also tied in with this as vaccines will be important for control and tracking purposes, but the Amish don’t concur, rightfully so!

  3. The Amish grow their food organically and are quite healthy. I am sure their land is valuable and someone wants it. A few years ago Michigan passed a law that put small farmers who raised pigs out of business. It didn’t really make the national news, but the picture of a farmer crying standing by his baby pigs that had just been killed by the state, was just sad.

    • That’s my thoughts. They have discovered some valuable resource on the land or they have a developer wanting it.

  4. 1st they came for the Amish and nobody did anything; then they came for the rest of US and no one was left to do anything – the only thing that allows evil to flourish is for good men to do and say nothing.

    • Peter Lemonjello,,,you are a coward and a troil. If you werent,,you wouldn’t hide behind a mask,,or use a false name,

    • You are wrong, of course they pay taxes. They are in accord with the Bible, which says “render to Caesar things that are Caesar and to God what is God’s.” My husband lived right next to Amish and knew them and their ways very well. You are either misled or a liar but either way you have a very COLD heart, sir.

      • You are correct. I grew up Amish and yes the Amish pay taxes. There is one tax that sometimes they do not have to pay and that is the social security tax. If it is an ALL Amish business and they hire only Amish, they do not have to pay the SS tax. The reason for this, they don’t collect SS, because for the Old Order Amish, they don’t believe in what they see as a ‘hand out. They believe they have to earn their way.
But other taxes they pay the same as we all do.

  5. Politicians in this Michigan County need to be executed for their crimes..When they ant to take our lives, We can TAKE THEIRS in Defense.

    • Its going to come to that. Its their plan, agenda, to cause chaos so they can declare martial law. Then kill at will.

  6. Now there is a war i can help join the fight. The American Citizens will stand by and let their houses be destroyed, because the law does not effect them. Americans are such losers. We have become such a passive people.

  7. I have Section 8 rental’s all over my neighborhood (thanks obama!) and they should be the ones to have there homes demolished! The hood rats don’t cut grass, throw loose garbage in the streets, and push their BS culture and lifestyle on all around them.

These Amish have made a choice, to follow their culture and lifestyle WITHOUT EVER pushing it on anyone else.

Evil knows no bounds, good is now evil and evil is now good…… it wont be long now.

    • The ACLU may side with them,,,but you didnt see in that article anything about them defending them. The attorney made a statement about what the should do,,not what they are doing for the Amish. But like you say,,,the Amish are white.

  8. They are very healthy and know how to live right. They have not hurt anyone. They believe in God/Bible. They use natural help for health. Man who is disconnected from God and thinks he is God is trying to destroy those who follow God and use natural ways to live which they don’t understand. God bless the Amish!

  9. Out here near “Joshua Tree National Park,” in California, our municipality (by State demand) has built a brand-spankin’ new sewage treatment plant.

With about 10,000 homes, previously on septic systems, switching over to our common human waste ( urine and feces ) processing system is costly and troublesome.

Sewage ( like the garbage/refuse industry ) business is big because of doctrines like “germ theory” and aesthics.

In my opinion, we have public education to thank for much of our hygienic mores current in our United States of America.

  10. They did the same thing to people who live off the grid. The electric , gas and water companies can’t stand it when you don’t give them your hard earned money !

  11. The Amish are an example for everyone. They mind their own business ….unaffected by COVID-19, with plenty of organic food and toilet paper.

    • Not true that they are unaffected by Covid-19. In Ohio and PA, some of the communities are going thru it now. It did not get to them early, but it has. How do I know, I am a former Amish and most of my relatives are still Amish.
I also know some Amish in Michigan, one was my best fiend growing up. Many misconceptions about the Amish.
But, yes I agree, they need to leave them alone. They are an asset to any community, not a liability. You will never see Amish with their hand out, taking welfare, food stamps and the like. They will take care of themselves.
I also believe they will win this in the end. The Supreme Court has ruled in their favor on other issues in the past, I suspect they will again.

  12. Our country was founded on religious freedom ..the Lenawee County ‘officials’ are behaving like wanna-be king tyrants! Their demands are unlawful …They need to be embarrassed and removed from office.

      • I don’t agree. The homes are still standing. While these things are in the court system the county can’t go in and destroy the homes and the ACLU being on the side of the Amish can’t hurt. As some have said above, it’s nice to see the ACLU on the right side. To often they are not.

  13. Government fears the free practice of religion more than any other institution in society…even more than an armed population, which is second.

  14. First the Amish, then who? The Baptists? The Methodists? The ????? You see it is about destroying personal freedom and creating an elitist state.

  15. Let them try and you’ll see us American’s come and deal with the Michigan governor !

  16. And to think NYC and SAN FRANCISCO are allowed to poison everybody now!
Both cities are unfit for human habitation!

  17. Amish must own some prime real estate that somebody in power and money wants pretty badly. Glad to see the ACLU helping them…some conservative people for once.

  18. THE AMISH ARE ALWAYS WELCOMED IN PENNSYLVANIA………WE LOVE THEM HERE. SEND THEM HERE…WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR THEM AND WE WON’T TAKE AWAY THEIR HOMES OR THEIR RELIGIOUS RIGHTS..

  19. when we go into a massive super depression, the amish probably would not notice anything different for a year. Only when people start showing up at their door steps asking for food

  20. “…unless the Amish community abandons its religious beliefs. So if the Amish abandon their religious beliefs, the structures will remain standing? What does them abandoning their beliefs have to do with anything. “We’re going to abolish these structures unless you stop believing the way you do; then we’ll let them stand.”
