Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Shakes Southern Taiwan

Several buildings, including a residential tower, have collapsed after a strong magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan early on Saturday.

Local authorities said they have formed an emergency response center following quake

According to the US Geological Survey , the quake struck at 11:57 a.m. PT about 14 miles northeast of the city of Pingtung, 19 miles (31 km) east-southeast of Tainan at a depth of 6.2 miles, the agency said.  As the quake was shallow it would have amplified its effects.

According to the USGS  a magnitude 6.4 quake is capable of causing a “severe damage”.

There there have been no reports on casualties as yet.

 

No tsunami warnings have yet been issued. 

Initial reports had said the quake measure 6.7

It has also been reported that Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau have measured a second quake of 4.3 magnitude in Tainan
