The Speaker of the Lords, Baroness D’Souza, described the peer’s alleged behaviour as “shocking and unacceptable” and said she was referring the matter to Scotland Yard.
In the footage, Lord Sewel, who is married, discusses the Lords’ allowances system and is seen snorting powder from a woman’s breasts with a £5 note
RT.com reports: The footage show’s Sewel naked with two women at his apartment in Dolphin Square, a luxury residence close to parliament. Flats in the block, which are popular among MPs and Lords, are also being investigated as part of the inquiry into alleged historic child sex abuse.
The video shows the Lord snorting white powder, which the paper alleges to be cocaine, from between the breasts of a prostitute using a five pound note, which a different shot shows Sewel wearing a bra and leather jacket while smoking a cigarette.
The BBC say: “Lord Sewel has this morning resigned as chairman of committees. The House of Lords will continue to uphold standards in public life and will not tolerate departure from these standards,” she said.
“These serious allegations will be referred to the House of Lords commissioner for standards and the Metropolitan Police for investigation as a matter of urgency.”
In the footage, Lord Sewel, who is married, also discusses the Lords’ allowances system.
The peer is yet to comment on the claims.
As chairman of committees, the crossbench peer also chaired the privileges and conduct committee, and was responsible for enforcing standards in the Lords.
The role, which comes with an £84,500 salary, meant he was in charge of proceedings when the Lords considered a bill at committee stage, and was automatically made a deputy speaker.
