Michigan university researchers have created a fully transparent solar concentrator.
The transparent solar cell could turn any sheet of glass into a photovoltaic solar cell.
That means any window or smart phone screen can be used to store solar energy.
The scientists used organic salts that absorb specific non-visible wavelengths of ultraviolet and infrared light. This light is then transformed into another non visible infrared light-wave, which gets trapped by the cells and used as electrical energy.
The system is called the transparent luminescent solar concentrator(TLSC).
It could allow mobile devices to recharge themselves using their screens. Windows in buildings could capture the energy and be used as solar panels.
