Footage of an impressive giant squid filmed by Russian fisherman has emerged online.
The footage shows the squid attempting to steal the fishermens haul as they prod the gargantuan cephalopod with a pole to drive it off.
The squid is about five times as big as the huge fish it is trying to snatch, but is eventually pushed away.
It remains unclear which species of squid this particular one is. There are two: the giant squid which is long, and the colossal squid which is broader and even larger than its cousin. Both are about 12 meters in length.
It seems more likely that this was a giant squid as it is not as large as the colossal squid – although it could have been a baby.
Not much is known about the species because only a few specimens have ever been caught or captured on video.
The creatures are rarely spotted by humans due to the depths in which they dwell. Their eyes are larger than a basketball, which allows them so see in the dark.
