Two Belgian women police officers were wounded by a man wielding a machete in the city of Charleroi on Saturday.

Officials have said that the attack appeared to be terror related.

The attacker who reportedly shouted “Allahu Akhbar,”(“God is great”) was shot by a third officer and later died of his injuries.

The Scotsman reports:

He was shot by a third officer and seriously wounded in the incident, according to the Belgian Police’s Twitter account.

The attacker subsequently died of his injuries in hospital.

One of the female officers was rushed to hospital with severe facial injuries.

The police confirmed that both injured officers were ‘out of danger.’

According to initial local media reports, the man was alone when he approached a security check point at the police station.

He then took out a machete from a sports bag and lunged at one officer, seriously injuring her on the face before swinging in the direction of another.

The second officer received only minor injuries.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel tweeted after the incident, saying: “I strongly condemn the attack in Charleroi.

Thoughts go to the victims, their loved ones and police. We are monitoring the situation closely.”

Police have cordoned off the area surrounding the police station near Boulevard Pierre Mayence in the city.

Charleroi was used as a base for some of the jihadists that launched attacks in Paris in November last year and Brussels in March.

32 people were killed and scores more injuried when suicide bombers attacked an airport terminal and metro station in the Belgian capital.
