Dr Fauci

Dr Anthony Fauci announced on Monday that he is stepping down from his positions in December, but said he is not retiring “in the classic sense”.

In a statement Fauci said he will be leaving his positions as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation and chief medical advisor to President Biden in order to “pursue the next chapter of my career”

Fauci said it had been an “enormous privilege” to serve under and advise seven US presidents on infectious disease threats, including HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Zika and Covid-19.

President Joe Biden praised on his soon-to-be former medical adviser and said in a statement that the US was stronger and “healthier because of him.”

Some Republicans however, have have vowed to criminally investigate Fauci, even in retirement, if they win control of Congress in November.

In response to news Fauci would be stepping down, Sen. Rand Paul said “Fauci’s resignation will not prevent a full-throated investigation into the origins of the pandemic,” saying the NIAID director will still be asked to testify before Congress.

In a statement, Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 House Republican said “It’s good to know that with his retirement, Dr. Fauci will have ample time to appear before Congress and share under oath what he knew about the Wuhan lab, as well as the ever-changing guidance under his watch that resulted in wrongful mandates being imposed on Americans”
