According to multiple sources (link 1, link 2, link 3) and The Week: “That’s Beijing Magazine has published video of a giant screen in downtown Beijing that is broadcasting an endless loop of bad news that has recently unsettled Americans, including the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, and an ISIS militant preparing to execute journalist James Foley. To say the least, it’s in questionable taste, as That’s Beijing explains:

The footage of Foley comes in spite of concerted efforts throughout western media, and especially on Twitter, to censor images of the execution. Many media outlets have been moved to depict the courageous journalist as he was in life, not death: a dedicated and respected war reporter. [That’s Beijing]

That’s Beijing editor-in-chief Steve George told Quartz:”This type of juxtaposition is fairly common in China,” says George, adding that images of peace and prosperity in China are typically contrasted with clips of violence around the world, promoting the narrative that “chaos looms beyond our pleasant and safe borders.”

According to That’s.com: “Thursday evening in Beijing’s downtown area – in the heart of Dongzhimen, and above one of the capital’s busiest transport hubs – a giant cinema-sized TV screen beams out looped images of racially charged riots in Ferguson, Missouri and Islamic extremists preparing to execute US journalist James Foley.

The footage of Foley comes in spite of concerted efforts throughout western media, and especially on Twitter, to censor images of the execution. Many media outlets have been moved to depict the courageous journalist as he was in life, not death: a dedicated and respected war reporter.

WARNING: Video below contains images of James Foley’s execution broadcast in Dongzhimen on 21 August
