Chile Earthquake: Tsunami Warning Lifted As Death Toll Reaches 10

Chile has lifted the tsunami warning that was put in place after Wednesday’s major 8.3 earthquake that killed at least 10 people.

“The tsunami warning is lifted for all national territory,” the government’s National Emergency Office said in a tweet early on Thursday.

The powerful quake shook Chile on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami and the evacuation of more than  1 million people.

The earthquake that hit Chile coastal areas at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT) on Wednesday was the sixth most powerful quake in the country’s history, according to the Deputy Interior Minister Mahmoud Aleuy.

The Province close to the epicentre was declared disaster zone according to ABC net who report: Central Choapa province, which was closest to the epicentre, was declared a disaster zone and placed under military rule.

The first tsunami waves struck Chile’s coast, including the tourist city of Valparaiso, local television pictures showed, but there were no immediate details of damage or injuries.

In Chile, more than 135,000 families were left without power in the north-central coast area, the National Emergency Office reported, lowering an early figure.

Chilean president Michelle Bachelet said she would travel to the quake-hit area to assess the relief effort.

Fear also seized residents in Argentina and a precautionary alert for Peru was later called off, civil defence officials said.
