Cancer Patient Who Was Evicted From Nottingham Home Has Been Charged

Tom Crawford who was evicted from his home on Thursday has been charged with assaulting a police officer.

There had been clashes with police as locals turned out to support the cancer patient who disputed claims he owed Bradford & Bingley £43,000 in mortgage payments.

Around 100 officers formed a ring of steel around the bailiffs to protect them and tried to block the supporters from getting to his home.

Nottinghamshire Police said they had arrested five people in Carlton, including Mr Crawford.

The BBC reports:

Both Mr Crawford, of no fixed abode, and the 34-year-old woman, of Woodthorpe, Nottinghamshire, have been bailed and will appear at the city’s magistrates court on July 31.

Terms changed

Dozens of protesters gathered as bailiffs, under police protection, took possession of the house in Fearn Chase.

A 43-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police constable in the execution of their duty, has been bailed and a 21-year-old man from Nottingham received a fixed penalty for obstruction of a highway.

Another 43-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, remains in police custody.

Mr Crawford claimed he had paid off the endowment mortgage he took out in 1988, adding the terms were changed without his knowledge.

People from across the UK joined a Facebook group called We Are All Tom Crawford, against the eviction.
