Almost 70% of Doctors: "LABEL GMO FOODS"

According to research, over 90% of Americans are in favor of labeling GMO food. A recent study shows that 68% of doctors are also in favor of labeling what is a GMO product.

The SERMO physician community conducted a poll of its members, asking the question: “Should food manufacturers be required to label products containing GMOs?” Of the 2,097 physicians who responded, 1,422 answered “yes.”

In their report on GMOs, the physician’s association refers to the recent World Health Organization’s findings regarding chemicals such as glyphosate, the herbicide widely used in GM agriculture:

Genetically engineered crop producers took another hit this year when the World Health Organization reported that organophosphate herbicides such as glyphosate are ‘probable carcinogens’, with limited evidence showing an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in occupational workers, and sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in mammals. The finding comes on the heels of renewed calls to update GMO regulations at the federal level and mandate that all GMO foods be labeled in stores.

The SERMO report also draws a comparison between proposed GMO labeling and the trans fat labeling legislation that was passed when it was proven that trans fats were associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Subsequently, the FDA and USDA called for new labeling that differentiated between trans fats and saturated fats. The labeling change had a significant impact, according to SERMO:

The regulation changes forced processed food manufacturers to use healthier ingredients, regardless of higher cost considerations. A consumer cultural shift followed suit and everyone paid more attention to food content.

The message was clear – when regulatory groups call out unhealthy additives, manufacturers fall in line and work to protect consumer health.

The scale of the problem

GM agriculture is now being practiced in 28 countries. Half of the available farmland in the United States is planted with GM crops. Roughly 90 percent of cotton, corn and soy grown in the U.S. is genetically modified.

The House of Representatives has just passed H.R. 1599, the erroneously-named “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015” which, if passed by the Senate and signed into law by the president, will block individual states from passing GMO labeling laws.

Nicknamed the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act, the legislation, in essence, will eliminate any possibility of mandatory GMO labeling laws being passed anywhere in the country.

It will also preempt states’ rights to regulate and oversee the production and sale of GM crops. The act will eliminate safe zones, such as areas around schools and residences, where GM industry chemicals cannot be used. The DARK Act will restrict states’ ability to protect the health of those who work on GM farms.

The purpose of this legislation is not just to block any GMO food labeling laws; it also seeks to remove any regulation of the GM industry in the U.S.

Those who voted for this (it passed the House by a 275-150 majority) can be considered traitors. They are bought-out cynics who have allowed Monsanto and others to wage chemical warfare on the population.

The polls show that virtually no one wants these GMO foods, yet they are being forced upon us by giant soulless corporations with the assistance of our cowardly leaders in Washington.

If enough of us stand up now and say no to this legislation being passed, there is a chance that we can stop it. Write to your senator and the president – let them know you are strongly opposed to the DARK Act.
