10,000 Dead Sea Lions Wash Up In California, Officials Announce “Crisis”

Fact checked

10,000 baby sea lions have washed up dead on a California island, with experts calling the unexplained deaths a “crisis” and “[Pups] are washing ashore at a rate so alarming, rescuers said Thursday, this year is the worst yet”.

Enenews.com reports:

KTLA, Mar 10, 2015: Stranding numbers for the months of January and February were more than 20 times the average [said NOAA].

ABC 10 News, Mar 14, 2015: Friday, Konnie Martinkis was burying her third sea lion… There were at least five within just more than a football field’s length that were dead… she contacted the city… but it just decomposed as more showed up… she will continue building those graves.

Coast News, Mar 12, 2015: [NOAA] said not to feed it [that] will only prolong the animals suffering.

KABC: Numbers are skyrocketing at alarming rates…Sunday, six sea lions were found dead

NY Times, Mar 12, 2015: “It’s getting crazy,” [Wendy Leeds, animal-care expert at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center] said… Sharon Melin, a wildlife biologist with [NOAA said] “We do expect the population to take a drop… probably a really good hit”… Michele Hunter, the center’s director of animal care, said, “It’s very difficult to see so much death.”

Sacramento Bee, Mar 7, 2015: Tens of thousands of pups birthed last summer are believed to be dying on the islands… some [are] desperately trying to climb onto small boats or kayaks… Scientists noted a worrisome anomaly in 2013, when 1,171 famished pups were stranded… scientists blamed the phenomenon on unseasonably cold waters… On San Miguel… Melin said researchers believe “probably close to 10,000 are dead, and we expect more to die over coming months”… the mortality rate is similar on San Nicolas.

Time: Experts at NOAA say that the culprit is rising ocean temperatures [note “unseasonably cold” ocean temps were the culprit during the record strandings in 2013]… a NOAA climate expert said that they do not believe the stranding increase is tied to climate change.

Marine Mammal Center, Mar 5, 2015: It’s clear these sea lions are trying to tell us something. Their very presence here in such great numbers at this time of year is sounding an alarm up and down the coast… it signals something complex happening in our ocean… sea lions are very sensitive to their environment… alerting us to major changes in the ocean… The scene on the Channel Islands this year is grave, worse even than what researchers saw in 2012, before the Unusual Mortality Event in 2013… “What’s scary is that we don’t know when this will end,” says Dr. Shawn Johnson, Director of Veterinary Science at The Marine Mammal Center. “This could be the new normal—a changed environment that we’re dealing with now.”

LA Daily News, Mar 13, 2015: “By the end of January, we had as many as we did in (all of) 2013,” [Marine Mammal Care Center’s David Bard] said… “We’ve never seen anything like this with back-to-back events that are affecting the same part of the population,” Melin said.

Dr. Melin: “Based on what we are seeing… we should be bracing for a lot more animals”

CBS Los Angeles, Mar 9, 2015: [California Wildlife Center’s Jeff Hall] says the event has escalated into a crisis. “I would personally consider this a crisis,” Hall said… The epidemic has prompted a number of volunteers to step forward, including… television personality Kat Von D [who said] “I think there’s a lack of awareness of what’s going on in the environment.”

  1. so what’s causing this? This is not news, just simple exploitation…news includes the the 5 W’s…..
    What, Where, When, Who…and WHY

    • Fukushima is the what, where, when, who and why. Read up on that and you’ll have your answer. It’s the issue that’s been forgotten ever since other world issues have been more recent. But the radiation from the Fukushima incident will continue to kill marine life for a long long time. Not to mention, don’t eat any seafood from the pacific.

        • The cause is unknown. People are speculating that fukashima is the cause but that is not the experts saying that. The article does not say that it’s because of fukashima. It could be anything causing it.

          • Um frigin duh!!! Obviously it’s fukashima. Only a fucking moron would overlook the nuclear power plant melt down right into their habitat.

          • A little nuclear reactor half way across the planet is causing this? Are you retarded?

  3. Any one think about the massive amount to nuclear waste pouring into the ocean from fukushima? That has been poisoning the oceans for the last 4 years and is continuing to. I can only imagine what it’s doing to the people of this planet as well.. All thanks to HAARP?! Scary world we live in.. Take off the blinders think and speak before its too late.

    • check the health score in your own homes; especially the skin on the young ones! no use looking the other way it affects us all

    • They have been taking about the oceans warming as the main problem, where the usual fish should be at a certain time of the year – when the seals are whelping – are now NOT there because the temperature of the ocean is not “right” for the fish migration…..the mother seals are starving, not producing enough milk to sustain their pups, ergo, they are washing up all over the fucking place, skin and bones, and dying by the droves. But there is no such thing as global warming, hummmm?

  5. Sacramento Bee: Cold water to blame… Time: Hot water to blame… LMAO…we’ve got some real expert “experts” here and not one mention of the hundreds of tons of highly radioactive water being dumped (and ongoing with no end in sight…ever) into the Pacific ocean for over 1600 days…anyone for Sushi ??…

    • Anyone, including the naysayers, test for radiation? Has there been any autopsy? What are the facts?

  8. Not to feed – you peices of garbage, get out there and save some of these pups, not to feed – you will prolong their s u f f e r i n g – you sick bastards – you sick sick people – you are what is wrong with the world.

  10. Have there been seismic blastings going on in the areas that may have killed the animals’ food or directly damaged the animals?

  12. Truth is it could be overfishing (not enough food), pollution, noise pollution, seismic testing, or a combination of all of these and more. When are we going to treat our oceans with more respect?? Stop the over fishing. Get the navy to stop sonar and seismic testing. This is just the beginning…

  14. I read that the chemicals used to clean up oil spills are toxic and create huge zones in the ocean where fish can’t live. No discussion of this is ever heard in the public.

  16. Fukushima which is still leaking. and half north American beaches has smeared. I do not know how many dead fish have immediate thing to rinse. Shhh, we know nothing but stop in jar so that no one knows…

  21. Takes a lot of water to cool 6 melted reactors at 100 tons each as they fission and the fuel pools with up to 40 years of spent fuel plus the fuel that was stored ready to use.. Not to forget the MOX fuel w/ Plutonium that is 2 million times more deadly than Uranium for the modified fast burn reactors and all of it and drainage waters running over and ground gathering over 2,000 isotopes running into the ocean at a rate of 400 thousand tons a day for 5 years … Couldn’t be a problem … http://beforeitsnews.com/contributor/pages/4/882/stories.html

  24. Inner ear drums prob blown out. Caused by teutonic High freq bursts from deep under the Ca. Coast. Look to nature you will see what’s coming. When that fault goes it will no doubt launch America into a power outage all the way to Ohio.

  26. IMO, from what I have seen by peeps living there and finding high levels of radiation with their Geiger Counters, it must be the hot particles in the ocean water. The “news” media is tightly controlled and can’t report anything that counters the official narrative. Censoring of the news is real and ongoing. We are to believe that nuke power is wonderful, not that it is killing animals and us humans.

  28. OK, wrap your plastic bags around this. Phytoplankton absorbs sunlight and carbon dioxide and makes sugar and oxygen. We suck up plankton that did this millions of years ago and liberate the sunlight in the form of fire by burning it creating carbon dioxide and heat (global warming) and creating plastic from its other properties. In reality, dead plankton is killing new plankton and us because of our intervention. Phytoplankton, the beginning and end of it all feeding the oceans and creating more than half of the world’s oxygen.
